પ્રાચીન સમયની વાત છે કે નૈમિષારણ્ય ક્ષેત્રમાં શૌનક વગેરે ઋષિઓએ અનેક મહર્ષિઓની સાથે હજાર વર્ષ પર્યંત ચાલવાવાળા યજ્ઞને પ્રારંભ કર્યો હતો, જેનાથી એમને સ્વર્ગની પ્રાપ્તિ થઈ શકે. એ ક્ષેત્રમાં સૂતજી પણ આવ્યા. ત્યારે ઋષિઓએ એમનો ખૂબ જ આદર-સત્કાર કર્યો. કેમ કે, સૂતજી પૌરાણિક કથાઓ કહેવામાં સિદ્ધહસ્ત હતા અને એમણે અલગ-અલગ રૃપોથી અનુભવ પ્રાપ્ત કર્યો હતો-આ જાણીને ઉપસ્થિત ઋષિઓએ સૂતજીથી કહ્યું- તમે અમને આ સૃષ્ટિ, ભગવાન, યમલોક તથા અન્ય શુભાશુભ કર્મોના સંયોગમાં મનુષ્ય કયા રૃપને પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે એ બતાવવાની કૃપા કરો.
