My First Love

My First Love

I met her through Facebook in one of those chatting groups. I was on the chatting group just like usual when a came across a user Riya Mehta. She had a gorgeous DP, long brown hair, big beautiful eyes and a cute dimple on her right cheek. At first I thought it was one those fake ids of a boy pretending to be a girl so I ignored her. I chatted in the group for some time and went to sleep.

Same thing happened the next day, I saw her in the group again. Even today I didn’t talk to her. This carried on for a week or so, we would be in the same group but chatting with different people.

The next day, I logged in as usual went to the group. I was chatting in the group and I noticed Riya wasn’t there. Though I never talked to her, but it felt awkward, as if something was missing. I thought of sending her a message but felt hesitant. Finally I sent her a message “Didn’t see you in the group...”

The day after, I logged in and saw that I had message. It was from Riya. It said, “So someone was missing me.”

“Nothing like that,” I said

“Oh really, then why suddenly the message,” she asked.

I didn’t know what to say but replied, “It’s just that I....I was worried when I didn’t see you.”

“Ohh, you were worried about me, how sweet,” she replied sarcastically.

We carried on talking and I came to know that she stays in the same city as me. We talked for some time and then logged off.

That was the first time we talked to each other. It felt good to talk to her. It was the first time I felt good talking to someone online.

Also the next day we continued talking. This became a regular thing and we kept talking daily. Soon we became close friends. We would talk for hours daily. We would talk about anything and everything, we would share secrets too.

She knew me inside-out, though we only talked through texts you can say she knew me better than I knew myself. She knew when I was sad, or happy, or when I needed someone to talk to. She was always there for me. She was just perfect.

I don’t know how, but I felt kind of attracted to her. I kept thinking about her all day, her words, her jokes, and the dimple on her right cheek. I just couldn’t get her out of my mind. I thought of telling her about my feelings, but then I didn’t want to risk my friendship with her.

The next few weeks went by quickly. But one day she said something that shocked me.

She : Let’s meet up...

Me : Really?

I was shocked and happy at the same time

She : Umm yes.

Me : What time? Where..?

She : Lake-side cafe...5pm, tomorrow

Next Day

The day had arrived when I was about to meet her, the love of my life, Riya. I freshened up and wore my best clothes. Put on some perfume and set my hair. I was all set and ready to go.

I came out and hailed for a cab. I hoped to get a cab soon as I didn’t want to get stuck in the traffic. I got in the cab and was on my way to Lake-side cafe. I checked my watch, it read 4:30pm. I told the driver to drive fast as I didn’t want to be late. Suddenly I got a text from Riya. She sent me a picture of her in red outfit.

She : (pic)

Me : Looking beautiful

She : I need to tell you something...before we meet.

She : It’s about my...

Me : Past? That’s fine.

She : My past...present...future

She : I am deaf and mute...

Before I could type anything my cell phone switched off...

I tried to switch it on but it wouldn’t switch on. I guess the battery had died. Riya’s words kept echoing in my mind as I tried desperately to switch on my cell. How come she didn’t tell me about this before? How could she do this to me? But she could have hidden it even now, the fact that she told me before meeting shows that she is honest. There was constant conflict in my mind as all the thoughts clashed with each other.

Meanwhile Riya was at the cafe, waiting for me and my reply. She kept waiting and waiting but there was no reply from my side. She was unaware of the fact that my mobile’s battery had died. Getting no reply from my side, she started thinking that I may not be coming after reading the text.

She thought who would want a girl who cannot speak or listen. This was the fear why she didn’t tell me about this earlier. But she trusted me, she had faith in me, which is why she decided to wait.

I was still on my way, as I kept thinking about her. This was the girl who I loved, the girl who I thought was perfect for me. How can I let go off her. I didn’t think of it when I fell in love with her, then why should it bother me now.

I checked the time, it was 5:20pm. My heart sank, as I thought she would have left not receiving any reply from me. I wondered what she would think of me, whether she would ever talk to me again.

Finally I reached my destination. It was 5:40pm. I hurried inside the cafe. My eyes were desperately searching for Riya. She was nowhere to be seen.

All of a sudden I saw a red scarf on a table on the opposite side. It was the same scarf matching the red outfit that she wore. I went to the table but no one was there. I took the scarf in my hand and thought she must have left. I tear formed in my eye as I held the scarf close to me.

Just as the thought of losing her came my mind, my eyes caught a glimpse of her. There she was, standing on the other side. She was happy to see me. Without saying anything, I just pointed at my cell phone, she understood the gesture.

I quickly ran towards her and took her in my arms. She had tears in her eyes as she hugged me. I could hear her unspoken words and replied “I love you too, Riya, and I will always be with you.”
