Are Your Dreams Colored or Black and White

Are Your Dreams Colored or Black and White

The question “ Are your dreams color or black and white ? ' is one of the things we most think about and is rather a tricky question . If we happen to come across this question ,what would be our answer? Do we really remember what we exactly dreamt about? These days life is colorful , color TV and color movies , why shouldn't we dream in color ? But still many of us dream black and white or grayscale.

How we think about and remember our experiences of dream , depends greatly on the technological age we are living or lived our most part of life . At the threshold of the 20th century our dreams changed color and they changed again in the 1960s.

As a matter of fact even before the  20th century often some great people talked about color dreams e.g .people like Aristotle , Descartes and Freud described their color dreams. Then around 1900 dreams suddenly became black and white . By mid-century researchers felt that dreams are black and white or grayscale by default .But again in the  1950s 1960s researchers found reporting of color dreams with the appearance of color media. . During earlier periods people were not  exposed to watching color things like - TV, newspapers, movies  and photography . Subsequently life became full of colors . The present generation has not been exposed to black and white or grayscale media .

In 1943 researchers hardly found anyone experiencing color dreams as they had no exposure to the colorful world we have today .As per studies Even now most dreamers talk about black and white or grayscale dreams , color seen only in emotionally charged events .

But most of the data available to researchers were based on responses to questionnaires circulated to a number of people and their response . Scientists gathered information they got immediately after dreamers woke up or they woke up from REM sleep. They found that a significant number of  dreamers on immediate waking up talked about color. Actually it’s very difficult to recall our dreams, so still disparity exists between the experiences of dreamers exposed to colorful media and black and white era . In fact, practically we don’t bother about the color of our dreams .

In the present HD color TVs and colorful cinematography it may appear hard for most of us to digest colorless dreams . On most of the occasions our dreams may be emotionally tubulant events like falling , failures at exams , flying , being chased by someone etc . Childhood exposure and experience to colorless worlds is the main factor . Some recent researchers found that dreamers 25- 30 or younger never dreamt of black and white . But older people above 60 who grew up in the black and white media usually talk about their experience of black and white or grayscale dreams.

Opinions were  widely divided on the color of dreams for almost a century . Studies from 1915 - 50 s show that most of the dreamers saw in black and white only. But the trend reversed in the 1960s and dreamers watched colorful dreams . The critical periods of our childhood watching trend impact the color of our dreams .

The factors impacting  for colored dreams and black and white dreams

1 . Generation Gap - As discussed above the age gap or the generation gap evolving our exposure to color or black and white media plays a significant role in this matter .

2 . Neurological factors - Researchers have found that different brain activities and structure of an individual person's affect the nature and color of their dreams . Damage to any brian area can also influence it .

3  . Individual’s capacity of visual imagery -  Factors like age , brain functions and capacity to interpret visual imagery of their dreams affect the nature of their dreams . Some people have very sharp and detailed visual imagery power .They can translate to more colors in dreams . People with lesser memory talk of colorless dreams.

Bottom Line - The period of transition from black and white era to colored media era has impacted a conspicuous result on the above subject and this has prevented researchers from drawing any conclusion on the color of our dreams .This can happen due to factors like generation gap , individual’s brain function and visual imagery as said above.
