 My Son Isn’t Mine 2

Part 2

Note - You have read so far that Sumeet and Eleen were in the same college . Eleen’s mother was a nurse and she looked after Sumeet while he was hospitalized. After discharge from hospital she brought him home , now read further …

Sumeet stayed at Eleen’s home for four days . Everyday  Sumeet and Eleen had their breakfast and dinner together . Eleen took her lunch in college as she was trying to catch up with missed classes and notes.

Once Sumeet asked  her “ I had seen your 12th marks and also NIT’s rank . You could have got Computer Sc. or any other branch . Why did you choose Biotech ? “

After a short silence she said “ Hmm , it’s our long range planning . My mom is a nurse. My aunty, mom’s elder sister, is also a nurse . She is in Dubai and her hubby is a Pharmacist in a Dubai Lab. After I finish my Post Graduation we have a plan to open our own Lab. “

“ Wow , what a great idea . My  Best wishes in advance .”

“ Thanks , it’s too early . It’s our dream. Let us see what happens in the future . “

“ Everything will be fine .”

After four days Sumeet said to Angelina “ Aunty , I am feeling better . I want to go to my hostel. I will have to catch  up with the rest of my class . I need to study more for which books are available in our library . Thanks for your kind gesture and wonderful hospitality . I will cherish these memories for my entire life . And Eleen is now my best friend . “

Eleen looked at him with a smile . Her mom said  “ Well if it’s a matter of your study , I won’t stop you but be careful with your meals and drinking water . I will send your lunch with Eleen and you have to come to us for dinner everyday till you are absolutely normal . And on holidays you will have lunch and dinner with us .”

“ Why not breakfast also , mummy ? “  Eleen said laughingly

“ I don’t mind , if he can make it .”

“ Is it not too much aunty ? You have already done so much for me .”

“ Let me do a bit more so that I can claim extra blessings from God and also from your mom . “

Things went like this for a couple of weeks after which Sumeet’s blood reports were normal . Then while having dinner he said “ Now I am better , so I will take meals from my mess . “

“ No, not for another ten days or a week at least . It’s for your wellness . I don’t want to see you in the hospital again .”

“ I don’t mind being in the hospital as you and Eleen are there to take care of me . “

Sumeet continued to visit Eleen’s house for another week  for his meals . After that he said to her “ Thanks for all you and your mom have done for me .  From tomorrow I will have my meals in the hostel . “

“ Ok but not on weekends or other holidays . “  Eleen’s mother said

“ I will try to come for dinner only .”

“ You have to promise , for me .”  Eleen said with lusty eyes which was noticed by both Sumeet and Angelina .

“ Okay my friend . “

After that though Eleen and Sumeet were not meeting at home regularly but they did meet once in the college canteen or library . This brought them closer and they were on the verge of transforming their friendship into  liking each other but they were always cautious about not crossing permissible social limits  .

Days and months passed by . Both Sumeet and Eleen were in their final year . Both got good placements in the campus itself. Sumeet was hired by a multinational and Eleen by a Pharmaceutical company .Both congratulated each other . Eleen said “ Thanks , but I have not yet decided about my job. “

“ Why , you have a good offer ? “

“ Ya but I want to pursue my PG . As told earlier our ultimate aim is to establish our own laboratory or clinic. Even if I join any job , it will be for a short period to get some practical experience .”

Eleen’s mother was also aware of the relationship between her daughter and Sumeet . One day she asked Eleen “  As far as I know both you and Sumeet like each other . I hope I am not wrong .”

Seeing Eleen silent for a minute she said “ You know , he is from an upper caste of Hindu . Will his family accept a Christian bride ? “

“ Mama , we have not discussed this issue but Sumeet personally has no issue with my religion . “

“ What about his family ? “

“ He has only a mother as an immediate family member . We are yet to decide on marriage  . But once he said that he is the only child and so his mother won’t disappoint him .”

“ Well take it seriously with Sumeet before you decide on a relationship . That’s utmost important . “

Eleen nodded her head .

After their final year Exam. Both Eleen and Sumeet wanted to get some Vocational training . Both got approval through their Principal for their training at Haridwar plant - Eleen at IDPL ( Indian Drugs and Pharmaceutical Ltd. ) unit at Rishikesh near Haridwar and Sumeet at BHEL ( Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd. ) Haridwar . They decided to have unpaid Vocational training for 45 days to have some practical knowledge . By the time their training ends , they were expecting their final results also .

Both went to Rishikesh and booked two rooms in a lodge . Sumeet had to go to  Haeidwar by bus or cab while Eleen got a daily  bus ride from IDPL . They left in the morning and returned in the evening . They used to talk on the phone at least twice daily , once during lunch break and other before leaving for the lodge .

On weekends they used to enjoy bathing in the Ganges . On the last day of training they got permission to leave their units at the lunch break . They were asked to get their Vocational training certificates the next day . It was summer , so they decided to have their last bath in the Ganges before leaving for home .  While bathing Eleen slipped and was drowning as she didn’t know how to swim .  Sumeet had finished his bath and just changed his dress . Not seeing Eleen nearby Sumeet was worried . He turned around in all directions then found Eleen struggling to save herself from drowning . He saw just head and face above water and after a minute or so only her hands were visible a foot  above water . He also heard some people cry to help her . He knew swimming , he immediately jumped into the river and swam quickly to reach Eleen . He saved her and brought her to the shore .

Sumeet and Eleen were crowded by some people . Sumeet laid her flat . He found a weak pulse and breath in Eleen. He was worried and asked the crowd to give open space so that she could  breathe. He asked one gentleman to call an emergency number and get an ambulance . He was told that it will take at least 25 -30 minutes for an ambulance to reach the sight . In the meantime Sumeet was advised to exercise Compression , airways and breathing techniques in the same sequence till medical help reaches .

So Sumeet started compressing her chest with the full weight of his body as fast as he could for about 25 times .There wasn’t any noticeable change in her . Next as advised   he tilted her head back and put one palm on her forehead and with the  other hand gently lifted her chin  . Then he put his mouth over hers tightly to make a seal. Then he started mouth to mouth respirations . He repeated this process and found her chest moving slightly upwards . Sumeet found some rays of hope. He was asked to repeat chest compression and mouth to mouth breathing twice. When he was giving second mouth to mouth breathing, Eleen's chest movement was significant and she opened her eyes and asked him in a dim voice  “ What is this ? “

“ Nothing dear , I was just playing with you . “   Some people laughed at this. By this time an ambulance with medical help reached there .

Eleen was taken  to a hospital. After checking her the doctor said “ She is out of danger . We will keep her in the hospital for 48 hours under observation . “   Then after turning to Eleen he said “ No worry young lady . You got first hand medical help from your friend . Any delay in that help on the spot could have been  undoubtedly fatal . That way you are lucky . Luckily there is no flooding  in your lungs . We will give you some further treatment and hopefully you should be discharged on the second or third day .”

Then the doctor said to Sumeet “ Why are you still drenched in water and making our hospital dirty ? “

“ I am coming straight from the banks of the Ganges .I will have to go to my lodge to change .”

“ No, somebody  has to be here with the  patient , I will see that you get a dress .”

The doctor asked an assistant to give him a set of fresh dress meant for the patient .Sumeet put them on and  spread his drenched dress in the lawn outside for drying.Eleen was silently watching all these with gratitude in her eyes .

Seeing Eleen safe , Sumeet felt relaxed .Holding her hand he said “ Thanks God , you are safe . I was very nervous when I saw you, almost breathless .”

“ My every breath will ever be obliged to you .”  said Eleen

“ Rubbish , don’t talk of any obligation . Probably you don’t know how much I love you .”

“ Yes , I know and I am glad to acknowledge and reciprocate my love for you .” she said with tearful eyes .

Wiping her tears Sumeet said “ This is time for you to relax , no sorrow , no tension. “

Then he took out his cell phone from his bag and said “ Luckily before jumping into the water I had kept my phone in the bag , otherwise I could have lost it .”

He called the BHEL training department and told he will collect his certificate tomorrow . Then he called IDPL ‘s training department and informed them about Eleen’s condition and asked “ Can I get her certificate ? “

He got a positive response . Sumeet said to Eleen “ Our train booking is for tomorrow . We can’t leave for at least two or three days as per doctor’s advice. We will have to reschedule it . “

“ I hope to be well by tomorrow . Let us talk to the doctor when he comes for a ward round in the evening . “
