A few days back a newspaper published how Ear and nose piercing of small kids is wrong and it should be abolished. It was in the context of a YouTuber who had made a vlog in which his young daughter was going through this practice. It stormed a controversy the Supreme Court too intertwined after a petition to ban this was filed.
People asked will the newspaper write against the circumcision of young kids(boys) in the Muslim community. By doing so they were trying to justify that if one wrong thing is prevalent then other wrong things can be sustained, it seems they have forgotten the essence of Sanatan Dharma which is not comparable to any other religion because it doesn't advocate for the worship of a god or do rituals it's just based on reasoning and when the basis is reasoning then if someone try to equate it with other religions then it means they are downgrading the status of Sanatan Dharma, now it is upon them to think whether they want to make it higher or downgrade it to the status of just rituals and whatever practices it encompasses.
Simon De Beauvoir a 1st wave feminist had said, that one is not born a woman but becomes one. It's a very strong statement that says a lot about our society which really tries to maintain its authority to demarcate men and women and due to this the other genders are confused as to what to choose and then they choose something different to show themselves different from these two genders. It is the society that makes one man or woman, sex is only bodily but gender is a social construct, and if we really want our women to be strong, independent, and empowered then we need to change the definition of many terms in the context of women.
Eg., Bold- doesn't mean if the lady is wearing revealing clothes or putting up other shades of lipstick then she's bold, boldness is whether she can withstand the opposing circumstances which come in her path if she is going the right way and not conforming to the societal definition of women that is she should look attractive and all.
Empowered doesn't mean whether she chooses to be naked or fully dressed, it means whether she's able to do her right work properly and live a life full of dignity without being objectified.
I have seen poor people spending on fake jewelry, the people who don't have money to eat for a time spend money to get some plastic, etc jewelry for their women, it feels pathetic how gender construct has made them fools.
Objectification of women is a very vast topic, read my post on the Dark sides of beauty contests
In conclusion, I want to say that some things should be left upon the person whether he/she wants circumcision, FGM, or Nose ear piercing only after being 18 years of age, and that too after teaching them if it is necessary or not, because it's also an orthodox practice that we are saying women must wear cosmetics without questioning it, why it shouldn't be necessary at all.
