(Story - Written by - - - - PRAMILA KAUSHIK)

Ikkal dukkal was a very interesting outdoor game for children, especially for girls in our times some 50 years back. This was 5 years old girl Vanya's favourite game. She used to play this game very often. She had seen her friends playing with a round piece ; by which they could throw it exactly on the required place.
Vanya tried her best to play with safety pins, piece of broken pitcher and many other objects. Vanya always lost the game. Her friend Natasha played with a round object and won always. Vanya felt dejected and frustrated everytime on loosing the game.
She said to Natasha - "please give me your round piece to play".
"No, I can't give you mine. It's my lucky one. You have to play with yours only".
Vanya was very sad and came back home. Her mother asked, "why she was so sad"? But Vanya didn't tell anything to her mother. Her mother got busy in her household work.
Suddenly Vanya saw the cupboard in her dinning room. She went there, opened the cupboard and sat on the earth. She took out one plate and tried to break it by tossing on the earth. She was upset because she couldn't get the centre round piece of plate. She again picked up another plate and tried to take out centre piece of plate. This time too she failed to get that round piece. She couldn't loose patience. She picked up the third plate and tried again. This time she was successful to get the perfect round centre piece of plate.
"wow! I got it, i got it". There were no bounds of her happiness. She went to her friend's house and called Natasha to play Ikkal dukkal. Both the friends played but this time Vanya was the winner. She was jumping with joy but Natasha was astonished to see Vanya's miracle round piece.
Vanya returned to her home very happily. As she entered home, she saw that her mother was getting angry on the maid Kamlaa for breaking the plates. Kamlaa was saying that she didn't know about those broken plates but Vanya's mom was scolding Kamlaa very badly. Vanya felt very guilty. Kamlaa was being scolded by her mom because of her only.
She said loudly - "stop, stop mom. Please mom don't say anything to Kamlaa aunty. It's only me who has broken these plates. I took out this piece of plate to play Ikkal dukkal. See how perfectly round is this piece. I won the game today because of this only".
So innocently it was said that her mother couldn't be angry on Vanya. She took Vanya in her lap, kissed her cheek and said, "Had you told me before i could have given you that piece from the already broken old plate".
Vanya said sorry to her mom and Kamlaa too. She was happy now to get her perfect round object to play but was sorry for her mistake too.
She promised her mother not to do such things in future.
