Uhes: An Intelligent Boy Who…
He was a very intelligent student who competed his B.E. degree in EE-EN engg. with very high grades from a highly reputed Indian Technological Institute (one of the top IITs of the country), and was aspiring to have an MS from USA, for which he had already applied, and also taken other examination/s to become eligible for obtaining fellowships; additionally he was also seeking admission and scholarships from other north American Universities (NAU).
His attempts succeeded and he landed up in one top-class US-University with full fellowship and even competed first semester with good grades, and just then concurrently he was receiving the messages and calls from one professor of the NAU, who was very much impressed with his biodata, but Uhes had been postponing to join this higher ranking Institution (NAU); but now that the professor Samhakin was very much after Uhes, that he finally joined him, and he got all his credit scores transferred from the US University to this NAU and started his MS studies here from the second semester. This transfer was relatively very smooth.
***
The proceedings at the NAU as such went very well for some time, but soon his times started changing, and a few outies-boys having come to know Uhes’s docile and obedient nature started exploiting him; they allured him with money and more perks, and utilized him to appear for the exams in proxy for them because Uhes was very intelligent student; and Uhes obliged them for extra monetary benefits, despite the fact that he was getting a good fellowship, and also because he was put under duress by these boys who were seasoned-locals with somewhat dubious characters and easy going life styles, of which Uhes was totally ignorant; even in his native country’s institution he had never got any such odd experience. In the final situation Uhes was caught in one of the papers during the examinations and was debarred from the NAU, and he couldn’t complete his MS degree, and he was not able to talk to his parents as he was terribly ashamed of his acts, and that he lost the golden chance of having a nice degree from the highly reputed foreign University.
His situation was that he was not able to come to his home country because he had no money, having lost the scholarship, and would not have been able to stay there; unless the actual ‘culprits’ helped him to meet his ends barely; this was ironical but there was no other hope for him because he would not get any other job immediately, and nobody would give any shelter to him, since he was now sort of penniless; so, he succumbed to the ‘bad company’ and was greatly and almost routinely exploited by the same sex partners for their own personal sevices (some of whom were in the first place responsible for the start of his downfall) and he started losing weight, health and mental equilibrium.
**
He used to call his home country only occasionally and always gave the impression that he was alright and everything was going on well with him in NAU, but his parents did not believe him, and when they used to call him, often he wouldn’t answer them. The things went worse day by day, and then the worried parents started real hunt for him. As an attempt they found out his where about and one day his mother devised a plan to visit him, for which she in fact went to USA on an official tour from her company of employment, and then on the return journey she made a visit to his place in NA (on her own personal expenditure for this extra detour journey), where the boy was living in some (make-shift) temporary accommodation/s, like YMCA, and with some friends, etc. and earning a minimum livelihood and had got really worn out; and despite this state of him he refused to accompany her back to their native country. The mother returned empty handed, but now was relieved that she had met her son, and that she had given her some money and suggestions so that he could recover his state gradually, and took promise from him that he would regularly call them and would be in touch with them; the boy was not psychologically prepared to come back so soon, mainly because he was feeling guilty and was thinking what face he would show to his father and his grandparents, who had taken immense care of him while he was growing up in their home.
**
After returning to her home country, the mother devised another plan, for which she had already established the contact with one close friend while she was with the boy for a week’s time in NA; and according to this plan the idea was that the next time she would visit the boy with his father, both would stay in that friend’s house for two weeks, bear all the international and local travel and boarding expenditure and somehow convince the boy to come back to their own country, and that to with the parents themselves on the return journey; and the boy should not get an inkling of hint of this secret rescue mission. Her friend/s were on watch of the boy’s activities, and were continually in touch with the mother and it was assured that the boy wouldn’t go far away from the friend’s residence, although he was staying in a separate rooming place.
**
And at the appropriate time in a great surprise to the boy his both the parents landed in the place of his mother’s friend’s residence as per the previous plan that was agreed earlier with this friend, who was generous to help the parents of the estranged boy. And the parents soon visited the boy’s place of residence and captured his passport and other important documents without the notice of the boy; these docs were not used by the boy for last several months, because he had then become incapable of travelling due to bad health, and weak decision making ability and want of money; in fact this was a great relief for the parents, however it looked like a negative way of looking at life of the boy; but there was no other go.
The parents soon started taking lot of care of the boy with further enhanced medications (especially for minor neurological disorders); in fact when his mother had visited him on the previous occasion, some medical treatment had already been initiated by her mother, and this had started showing a good improvement in the health of the boy.
So, in the process the parents induced the boy in the sensible dialogue with them, and delineated various demerits of continuing to stay in this country, and merits of going back with the parents assuring him that all the family members loved him, and that every one of them would take immense care of him, and also sighted very important reason that his daddy being a BP (and diabetic) patient requires a contnual attention from the boy, since the other son of the father is still younger. In a process of time the boy yielded and agreed to go back to the home country, and then the arrangements were made for him to accompany him with the parents. Ironically, the boy was totally secretive of the whereabouts of the ‘culprits’, and maybe he was warned and threatened not to reveal anything; and hence the parents couldn’t think of taking any actions against these negative elements of the society, and ironically these were also protected in their NA country under the laws of privacy and lack of other procedural details and logistics which were not enacted by the uninformed parents at some earlier time; but the parents felt happy that at least their son had agreed to come back.
**
Then the boy started searching his passport, and not finding it, declared that he cannot go back with them since he is not able to find the (travel) documents, to which the mother said that his passport was with her to which the boy got infuriated and got upset, that his privacy was breached; but the parents with a series of logical arguments over powered the boy, and said that if he did not comply with their desire and plans, they would behave with him very strictly and if need be would take the help of the police, so then the boy finally agreed, because earlier he had already gravely suffered at the hands of such security personnel when he was caught in the exam scam, the memory of that resurrected in his mind.
**
Eventually, the trio returned to their home country, and the boy got the job on the basis of his first degree only, but with the condition set by the mother that their son would work from home always, except the days on which he is supposed to attend any meetings in the job place related to his own assigned work. This was readily agreed by the his employer because the boy as such was very intelligent and hardworking and the story of his utter failure in the foreign land was kept in utmost secrecy, and since the boy’s health had improved considerably due to regular medication, and reduced tensions, now that he was amongst his own beloved family members, the arrangement was going on very well with his employment and home. One more condition from the mother was agreed upon by the company in respect of his job that he should not be considered ever to be sent abroad on any official work and deputation how much the former might be essential for the parent company, and how much the latter might be alluring to the boy; even including the parents, since by now their economy had been drastically affected with losses, and no gain of any kind to cherish upon except that their lovely, handsome, and talented boy had been recovered.
**
Unfortunately, although the boy was professionally very happy and satisfied, he used to always have discussions and arguments with his parents on the issues related to: a) again going or not going to abroad, b) parents keeping the hold of his passport, c) he has now developed lot of respect to the Christianity despite his parents being staunch Hindus, and d) his outrageous views on holding lot of properties (by the parents), and monies and not being offered in donations to the needy, and so on…
**
The parents have become too possessive of the boy, for the obvious reasons and due to the nature of the boy, but his independence is controlled and he has to live like a teenager once more just to satisfy his parents’ desires and urges; of course he is regularly fed and his health is taken care very well but he does not have much independence; the control is regulated even to the extent that this ‘much more than the adult boy’ is swiftly taken away in the custody by the mother as soon as his technical presentation related to his work is over (in some review meeting), and even he is not allowed to mix with other participants and office mates; the fear has so much set in the minds of the parents that the boy has not got even a single opportunity to say hello and thank the referees who had given him extraordinary recommendations letters on the basis of which the boy had got admission/s and full fellowship/s to study abroad; the parents, perhaps think that because of this only the boy got into the problems on the foreign lands; ironically it was her mother who was after these very experts to get strong recommendations-letters on behalf of the boy because she wanted him to go abroad and get a good degree from a foreign University of very high ranking. In one incidence when the boy had just started talking to one of his referees who had given very strong letters for his fellowship applications, the mother who was self-acting as his close body guard suddenly pulled the boy away and went away, without realising that she was insulting the boy’s innocent-curtsey call to his mentor and the mentor himself who had guided the boy in his final year of the degree; and to add the fuel to the fire, she even did not show any respect to the boy’s mentor who was also the guy with whom the mother had discussed the boy’s issues and problems several times and got lot of good suggestions from him. The mentor was expecting that the duo would join for the lunch after the meeting and there he would get a chance to listen to their struggle and the stories of the outcome of the valiant efforts put by the parents, and the courage and will power with which the boy lived very difficult years abroad: the mother had turned up every stone to see that she was able to trace and track his son and his movements, for which she had utilized all her connections with the leaders of some units and organizations whoes heads had very close influences in the political arena, including the external affairs departments, and even similar establishments of the country where her boy was sort of ‘trapped’, and had even not left the security persons there, and other experts who were known to the mentors of the boy in his home country, including his professors with whom the boy was undergoing his higher studies; and of these efforts some had paid off very well to her endeavours and as a result of which she was able to really bring back her son to their home country in a process of time that was stretched nearly for two years, in fact a long wait for the family members as well as the boy himself. And in the same unexpected and undreamt of upheavals they forgot to appreciate the help and efforts of some of their well-wishers, of course for which they cannot be held totally responsible because their circumstances were horrendously peculiar and precarious, time consuming and draining due to sleepless nights for sevearl months; their main motto was to rescue the boy and any other formalities were of no priority and consequence to them.
***
Uhes, an intelligent boy who now lives under the total protection and care of his mother, despite he being very mature, and much improved; earns a good salary and runs a small private company as a proxy for her mother; his talents and ideas are being utilized for theirs and of course his fame, to regain the lost esteem and as a compensation to their the then downward economy, but all again in a sort of ‘contrived’ way, since no long terms solutions seem to have been carved out, and where this arrangements would lead nobody can divine; the boy being the most obedient lives under such over-protection, may be he feels most comfortable under the present circumstances; granted the suffering he had had undegone in the previous three years.
We often say mysterious are the ways of the master/s; however, it would be very apt here to say that the mysterious, nosey, snooping, and intriguing ways are of certain mother/s, not all the mothers (with my due respects to all the mothers of the world) as this story proves it very well.
