Uman: Case 6
He was born and brought up in a village, and when his secondary schooling was over, he was admitted to first degree course in a reputed self-sustained/managed University that was situated in a nearly newly developed medium sized city in one of the most industrialist states of the country. The University-city was quite far from his village. He was healthy, handsome and somewhat fair skinned, and was an outgoing type, and had a good flair for attracting girls and used to spend lot of time with them out of his classes in the college, and study hours. For some reason, he maintained his performance unaffected by his verve of the extracurricular extensions that took a peculiar bent in the process of time to upsurge.

To save expenses of dining in costly places, when the services from the college residential hostel were not available during the long vacations (after winter and mid-term exams), he found out a place where he started staying as a paying guest, where food and lodging were provided at a reasonable cost. He used to go to his native village only for a week during holidays, to stay with his parents, and one elder brother; this only in the beginning, and in the later years he avoided such visits to his parental home.

Uman habitually started staying in the paying guest house (PGH) during all the vacations under the excuse of extra studies and classes; but his main reason seemed different; he had developed a liking to the girl, who was only daughter of the owner of the paying guest; this owner was incidentally a widow, and was forced to run a small PGH in the neighbourhood of the University to earn the livelihood for herself and her daughter who was about to just finish her high school study. The owner managed the PGH with the help of one coordinator who helped her in the logistics of the PGH and the finances, etc., in fact the intake in the PGH was very small, not more than half a dozen boys, since the owner’s house was small; her main idea had been to provide meals to boys and girls who did not go to their native places during the college vacations.

Uman’s outgoing nature, and care-free living style was very much responsible for him to have had got entangled with this girl who was just in many aspects, of average beauty (‘with my due respect to all the girls’) and get up; in fact she was a bit darker than the boy, but still was attractive at least to Uman, she was articulate and had good communications skills. When her mother came to learn of her daughter going with Uman in the city for shopping of goods and groceries for the house as well as for the PGH, she overlooked this aspect, since she felt that the protection from Uman would be safer for her rather than allowing her to go alone.

As a result the girl (TG) used to go in the city not only for shopping, but also to her friends’ houses with Uman who was in a way very polite outwardly and especially so for the girls, because he had a soft corner for them inherently; and he was always looking for an opportunity to go with this girl.

Back at home, Uman’s elder brother had got some hints of his brother’s affairs, since he himself had stayed in a hostel in another city for his own studies, and there he had observed a few of such incidences, so he was on watch; however, he thought it premature to disclose this to his parents, since he wanted to get some more concrete information from his spies who were staying in the neighbourhood of the University where Uman was studying.

Uman had in fact gone so deep into the relation with TG, and eventually when he had completed his studies and got degree, and had started working in another city as a medical representative, she started visiting him too often. Occasionally her mother used to accompany her and both used to stay with him for a couple of days, and used to go for sight-seeing together. The girl had already entered her phase of adulthood and looked as a full bloomed woman and was more demanding than earlier on Uman, who as such was of very much obliging nature; this was a strength as well as a weakness, the latter was not liked by TG, so one day she took an issue with Uman.

TG: Uman, I am increasingly getting worried that your benign nature and not being able to say ‘no’ to all my demands, logistics, technical and even of too personal nature, might become an issue of contention between me and you.
Uman: Why are you telling me this?
TG: It is just a cautionary note that your PGH owner (PO) also has been staying with us for some time, and I suspect that you might not be able to say ‘no’ to her if she demands your personal deep care to meet her bodily desires.
U: This is not true, I know when to say what, and at this stage and age of mine, nobody has to teach any lesson or give an advice to me. You must have trust on me.
TG: Well, that was my caution and not any accusation or anything like that.
U: In the first place, I have not invited the PO, and she accompanies sometimes when you come here, and since the room-place in my temporarily rented house is not enough we have to sleep in some odd ways, and manner, there is no other way.
TG: But, often I see you talking with her too much intimately, and I am sort of worried about you both; especially your type being too soft, and she being yet very active, attractive and even demanding.
U: Well, isn’t she your own mother too?
The girl did not answer and went away for shopping, this was perhaps the last chance for Uman to spend good time with PO.

Uman called PO and made her sit very close to him, since now that TG was away at least for an hour, and chitchatted and enjoyed lot of intimacy; to this they were used to even when Uman was a paying guest in the city of his studies, but they were so careful that nobody had suspected this then; but now that she had accompanied TG and the three are staying together, TG has started suspecting the illicit relation between PO and her own possessed boyfriend, Uman; may be TG had known this even earlier, but was not able to make any issue then, but now she wants to ascertain her own solitary claim on the man, especially now that she had even decided to propose to marry with him; so she has become bold in her declaration and demands; since it has to be now or never; she feared that Uman might leave her and go completely with PO.
Uman told to PO what transpired between him and TG; to which PO did not react much, but both decided to be very careful, and of course PO told him that she really would like TG to get married to him, and further added that they (PO and Uman) should reduce the conversations and even meetings, maybe meet at some different place far away from this house.

Once, during TG’s visit to Uman’s city, PO did not accompany her, and to which Uman was surprised but it was soon clarified that PO was not keeping so well. However, very interestingly, just on the second day Uman got a call from PO that she was coming to his city and getting admitted to a particular nursing home and requested him to visit her there. This was not known to TG; and Uman visited PO a few times in the nursing home clandestinely and spent quite a good quality and quantity time with PO. After PO recovered she went back to her own residence in the University-city.

The elder brother’s spying on Uman had picked up speed, and based on the then current information of Uman’s activities in the city of his work place, especially with the two women, he decided to alert his parents which he did, and both the parents were too furious with Uman, but their elder son told them to handle the situation very calmly and in a very matured and composed manner. Then, the only solution was to persuade Uman to come to the native place on the pretext of his parents not keeping too well, and that he should come home at least for two weeks to stay with them, and that also there was some discussions needed about how to share the parental property. A close relative was sent to the city where Uman worked, and Uman was appealed to go with him to their native place; to which Uman complied reluctantly.

In the village the parents and other close relatives and friends had made a solid plan to get Uman married in a very closely guarded small function, and for this they had found out and selected a very beautiful and homely bride, and prepared the pundit for the quick wedding ceremony, and all would have to be done with tight security, and in the ‘forced’ manner if Uman resisted even a little; and this plan was executed meticulously without a single fault to which Uman was taken by surprise, was not able to resist the beauty of the bride who was first asked to spend a full day with him in his native house, and he finally got married to her, stayed for two weeks with his parents, who were only slightly indisposed but not serious, and the entire episode was enacted successfully, but Uman though being a benign man was intelligent and could understand the plan of his parents and especially of his brother; but he did not make any issue of this since, there was no point of doing that; he might have also felt some relief that he now could have logical reasons to get a freedom from (implicitly cold-) warring duo-women (both perhaps, in their minds and heart knew that each other was enjoying all the personal bodily pleasures with Uman, but were not making a big issue of this rendezvous, because that would have been a demerit to both), of course this being also a hard thing for him to avoid, since he was also very much involved with the duo, because in his initial days in the college these two ladies supported him during the vacations by providing shelter and food, and also gave him moral support in addition to giving much needed womanly company that he was yearning for while he was transiting into an adulthood.

So, it was very hard for him to think of deceiving them, and was a bit worried as to what would happen to him, if the duo visited him when he was staying with his wife, and made a big hue and cry; he lost sleep for a few days; and to his expectation the duo did visit one day in his city of work; and the Uman’s wife received them in her home, since her husband had gone out for work, and the duo was not able to contact him before coming here, since Uman had temporarily cut off the communications with them, and that he had not, in fact he couldn’t inform them about his marriage, and the manner in which it was conducted in a short time and with utmost secrecy.

Uman, on the return from his work was not so much surprised, but acted as if he did not know them, and then gradually recollected (as if from the forgotten memory) and clarified to his innocent wife, that they were the PGH owners and had come to collect the pending rent, that he was not able to pay during his study years and his initial days of his wok in this city; to which the wife nodded and did not make any issue of this. Then, Uman after the high tea went with them to the bus station to see them off, and there the duo blasted, accused him of cheating them, misusing/spoiling them, hurting their feelings, and cursed him, and this lasted for at least an hour in argumentations and altercations and in finding/narrating faults with each other; and since they were not relenting, Uman offered some money to them, to which the duo reluctantly agreed, but also they then demanded a heavy price that was in some thousands, to which Uman had no option but to agree; but since the duo wanted to settle the score there and there; Uman then offered his costly chain of gold and two golden rings to them which they then accepted and boarded the bus to their city and bade the farewell to Uman to a great relief to himself.

Uman returned home almost disgusted, and even depressed, but did not disclose to his wife what had happened at the bust station. He started living his life as if nothing had happened to him, and his wife though had suspected that something might have cooked between her innocent looking husband and the duo-visitors to his house just after her marriage, she did not pursue this ever in the better interest of their otherwise peaceful years.

Uman in his own shroud way closed the curtain behind which lot of illegal/illogical and ugly things had happened that his wife had no clue (he thought that way), and she ignored the ‘scantly’ known ‘truths’ in her best interest as a very mature bride, and in the latter times, as years rolled by, as a mature house wife and caring mother of her two smart, handsome, and intelligent sons, and one beautiful and talented daughter from her consummate union with Uman who was outwardly a thorough gentleman, always smiling, and rarely getting upset or angry on anybody, but inside he was a volcano of unfulfilled desires, not totally his fault though.

Uman, after retirement from his job, immigrated with his wife to a foreign country to stay with their son and his family; and therefrom one day he left this world to the abode of almighty (!); and his wonderful, considerate, and very mature widow, like a statesman (or a stateswoman/a diplomat) still lives with her son’s family, with all her questions (that were never asked, and hence remain) unanswered, and what happened to the duo-women was lost in the labyrinth of the time that has its own dynamics, but it looks as if it is always too simple, static and benign.
