Better-half – A Short Story

One day as nowadays happens, due to their being senescent and passé; they had been shifted to some other place where they might be needed. They are little timeworn and due to rough handling at the time of transfer, got little injured too. But, not to care for old hats is a mundane fashion today.

One morning,

He: “Hi dear, how are you feeling now?”

She: “I am quite well. How is your leg? Is it fixed now?”

He: “Oh yes, don’t you worry about me old bird! I am still that sturdy.”

She smiles gently in agreement.

She: “This house is good but don’t you think, it is considerably smaller as compared to the previous one?”

He: “Yes dear, I also feel that. I know you must be missing that large landscape of the garden and your favorite flowerbeds nearby.”

She: “You are right. I do miss those moist mornings, the fresh air and smell of flowers, the hot savoring fumes of tea and the raw, tangy odor of orange juice.”

She with a sigh becomes nostalgic. He could clearly notice the twinge she had of leaving the previous home.

He (in a soft tone): “But, you must have noticed that it is so cozy here and we won’t be feeling that heat in that daylight which has faded your complexion in these years.”

She blushes.

He remembers the day when he saw her for the first time. So simple but still a piece of art! Shining in sunlight, her gleaming, polished, wheatish complexion had an enchanting effect on him. He felt that his existence is for making a good pair with her. He is just designed to match her.

She: “What are you thinking? Is your leg still hurting? Someone should help you with it. I hope here they are bit sensible.”

He: “Lady, you are getting so much worked up with my leg problem. Don’t bother much.”

She: “I was not worrying previously but now it’s different. Aging has affected both of us as my joints are also weakening.”

He; “Oh my beauty, it is fine. Time affects everything and everyone. Your joints are getting weaker not because of aging but that robust, barbarian, gorilla like kid has damaged you more.”

He looks little distressed.

She: “Come on, just a kid he was!”

He: “But, jumping in someone’s lap is not vindicable. I don’t appreciate such boorish gestures and you also should not.”

She: “Ok, calm down. You are over reacting dear. See, we already have changed the house now. Look, the lady is ready with lunch. Now she will load you with those hot plates and casseroles. I really don’t like this and literally hate her rough behavior with you.”

He (with a smile): “Who is over reacting now? Try to understand that it’s my job to serve them. I also don’t like when she freights you while watching TV or having lunch or dinner.”

She: “I know you are right. We are meant for that but I wish you could have little rest as you are doing this for years.”

He: “I really love you. This is your affection and perseverance for me. Believe me I am totally fine doing this and I can serve anyone, any longer till you are sitting in front of, smiling at me….

She shimmers listening this.

He continuing: “…… you know, I feel proud and privileged to be aging with you. I know that I am destined to accompany you in blaze or murk of life. And that gives me a reason to live happily with you. I wish I would be facing you on the last day of my life too.”

She with a vexed expression; “I don’t like this. Why to talk about end of life? We will be living longer, together.”

He: Ok, Ok, won’t talk on that. See, here is the tea time. This woman makes good tea, don’t you think?”

And the conversation continues day and night between this pair of chair and table. Both of them cherish their togetherness for lifetime with love, care, affection, warmth and yen for each other. Teaching us to be the true better half in real sense!
