As sometimes happens, once upon a time there were a very successful Master and his very unsuccessful disciple. The master was very popular in his own time due to his intelligence and knowledge. People from far and near visit him on regular basis to resolve their problems. In reverse his only disciple was a dull one. He was experiencing nothing but failure in anything and everything he was attempting at. He was failing to understand where the problem is.
One day back around two years, he had come to the master with his own bunch of problems. But he did not return back as he had decided to stay with master till his success. Time has passed like water, but no change happened to his fate. He was totally upset to his life. Many times he has thought to committee suicide but something or other has made him to live so far.
Many times he had listened his Master speaking about magic of mind. One day his master was saying “Mind is a magical instrument. One can do anything and everything by using his/her mind. Human progress both worldly and spiritually has only become possible due to mind. It does not mean that other animals do not have mind. They have their own mind. But the potential what the human mind has is found to be seen with no other animal. It only required to be channelized.”
After knowing this the disciple thought, he has new concept to experiment with. He did whatever he could have done to exercise his mind but nothing except failure he could experience. He loosed all his patience and rushed to his master with a heavy heart. He touched in his master’s feet, who was mediating at that time and started to weep.
Master opened his eye and told him, “Dear, what is wrong with you? Why are you weeping? Is everything ok?”
The disciple told in a crying voice, “Nothing ok Master…..nothing. Whatever I am doing gets failed. You are talking about magic of mind. But why my mind is not working? Where is its magic? Or, I have no mind? Please explain and help me….please.”
The master paused for a while and told, “Ok we will come to your matter. But before that can you please bring a sharp knife and some varieties of vegetables for me from market?”
The disciple had no other option except following instruction of his master. He went to market and purchased a sharp knife and vegetables as per order. Then he returned back and waited for Master to come.
Master checked everything and asked the disciple to arrange all vegetables at a place, which was around 15 ft from his standing point and then he called disable to come close to him and told, “ through this knife into vegetable bunch such a manner that all vegetables would cut down in single attempt.”
The disable was absolutely helpless and could not understand what was going on. But he did as per the instruction of Master. Then Master told, “Go, and check what happened.”
The disciple went and searched for the knife for some time and told to the Master “See master, what has happened to the knife! It has been damaged.”
“And what is about vegetables?” the master asked.
“Nothing sir…. those are unaffected. Those are as those were” the disciple answered.
Then the master told, “Oh… now do like this. Take the same knife and cut every vegetable one after another and back to me in evening.”
Everything was going beyond disciple’s understanding level. He was not able to understand why his master is doing this such experiment with him. But as per the ashram’s guideline he had to obey Master’s order.
In the evening he met his Master with well prepared vegetable. The Master checked and told, “Well done dear… you have done a nice job. How is your knife? Show that to me.”
The Master checked the knife and told, “See… It has gone sharper! Is not it….”
The master was about to leave. The disciple stopped him and told, “My question is still unanswered Mater. Kindly help me out.”
The Master smiled at him and told, “Really you could not understand anything out of this experiment?”
“No Master” Answered the disciple.
“Ok.. let me to explain you” the master paused for a while and went ahead “ See… when you threw the knife into the vegetable, why could not it do anything except harming self. There was no issue with his sharpness. Issue was with its use. We threw it on so many vegetables at a time. And it left with damaging self.”
The master continued, “This is how we are using our mind. We are trying to get our mind into so many things at a time. So it is failing to do anything except damaging self. But the knife did its job well when we tried to cut down vegetable one after another, one at a particular time. In the same vein, if we will allow our mind to be in a particular thing till the time we are with the task or till the time it has not done- then there is nothing for the mind which it cannot do.”
The Master concluded, “Dear disciple, it’s all depends on how we use our mind. This is what we call channelizing your thought. Our thought is the most powerful weapon with us. Thought has the caliber to manifest anything and everything, if we will concentrate one- it may be good or bad does not matter. It’s all about using your mind. This mind also has a bad practice. If it starts to use you, it will leave you with no gain.”
The master paused for a while and continued, “So develop the practice to concentrate. Then assign this concentrated mind any particular job and see what wonder it is making for you…..this is the secret of success.”
The disciple was listening to Master very attentively. Now he had a new thing to experiment with. And he was very sure this time he will never fail.
