इन्दिरा का जन्म 19 नवम्बर 1917 को राजनीतिक रूप से प्रभावशाली नेहरू परिवार में हुआ था। इनके पिता जवाहरलाल नेहरू और इनकी माता कमला नेहरू थीं। इन्दिरा को उनका गांधी उपनाम फिरोज़ गाँधी से विवाह के पश्चात मिला था। इनका मोहनदास करमचंद गाँधी से न तो खून का और न ही शादी के द्वारा कोई रिश्ता था। इनके पितामह मोतीलाल नेहरू एक प्रमुख भारतीय राष्ट्रवादी नेता थे। इनके पिता जवाहरलाल नेहरू भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आन्दोलन के एक प्रमुख व्यक्तित्व थे और आज़ाद भारत के प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री रहे।
