ચંદ્રગુપ્ત પ્રથમનો પુત્ર હતો મહાન સમુદ્રગુપ્ત. સન ૩૩૫ થી ૩૮૦ એનો સમય કાળ. પણ ગ્રેટ મિલિટરી જનરલ એવા આ રાજાએ ગુપ્ત સામ્રાજ્યને નવી દિશાઓ આપવાનું કામ કર્યું. આજુબાજુના નાનામોટા તમામ રજવાડાઓને યુદ્ધો કરી પોતાના રાજમાં ભેળવી દીધા. ઉત્તરમાં નેપાળ પંજાબ દક્ષિણમાં પલ્લવ અને કાંચીપુરમ સુધી એનો કાબુ હતો. સમુદ્રગુપ્ત ચન્દ્રગુપ્તનો સૌથી મોટો પુત્ર નહોતો. એના મોટાભાઈઓ હતા પણ પિતા ચંદ્રગુપ્તની પસંદગીથી એ સમ્રાટ બનેલો. પિતાની પસંદગી ખોટી નહોતી. તે એક બાહુબલી રાજા હતો.
