इसी दिन समुद्र मंथन के समय क्षीर सागर से लक्ष्मी जी प्रकट हुई थीं और भगवान विष्णु को अपना पति स्वीकार किया था। कथा इस प्रकार है- एक बार भगवान शंकर के अंशभूत महर्षि दुर्वासा पृथ्वी पर विचर रहे थे। घूमत-घूमते वे एक मनोहर वन में गए। वहाँ एक विद्याधर सुंदरी हाथ में पारिजात पुष्पों की माला लिए खड़ी थी, वह माला दिव्य पुष्पों की बनी थी। उसकी दिव्य गंध से समस्त वन-प्रांत सुवासित हो रहा था। दुर्वासा ने विद्याधरी से वह मनोहर माला माँगी। विद्याधरी ने उन्हें आदरपूर्वक प्रणाम करके वह माला दे दी। माला लेकर उन्मत्त वेषधारी मुनि
