"આ કેસર હજી સુધી શાકની લારી લઈને આવી નહિ, દસ વાગી ગયા, ક્યારેય આટલું મોડું નથી કર્યું. હમણાં ટેમ થઈ જાશે ને મારી રાતપાળી પુરી થશે. મારે ઘરે જાવું પડશે અને કેસરને મળ્યા વગર કેમનો જાઉં?" જીવણે કેબિનનો દરવાજો બંધ કર્યો ને સોસાયટીના ગેટ પાસે આવી રસ્તા પર નજર પાથરી ઉભો રહ્યો. જીવણ આનંદવન સોસાયટીનો વોચમેન હતો. કાલે એની રાતપાળી હતી અને કેસર હતી શાકવાળી. રોજ સવારે બરાબર નવના ટકોરે કેસર પોતાની હાથલારીમાં તાજા તાજા શાક ભરી આનંદવન અને આજુબાજુની સોસાયટીમાં આવતી. એના તાજા શાક અને એની ખુમારી અને પ્રામાણિકતાથી લોકો હોંશેહોંશે એની પાસેથી શાક ખરીદતા. કડકડતી ઠંડી હોય કે
