અશોક પોતાના પરિવાર સાથે એક નાનકડી ઓરડીમાં ભાડે રહેતો હતો. તેને એક ખૂબજ ડાહ્યો, હોંશિયાર, ચપળ, ચબરાક અને બુદ્ધિશાળી એવો દશ વર્ષનો દિકરો હતો. તેનું નામ અલય હતું. તેની ઓરડીની પાછળ જ બીજી એક ઓરડી હતી જેમાં એક રમેશ નામનો છોકરો ભાડે રહેતો હતો. અને ઉપરના પહેલા માળે મકાનમાલિક રહેતા હતા. અશોક રિક્ષા ચલાવતો હતો અને તેની પત્ની ચેતના ત્રણ-ચાર ઘરનાં કામ કરતી હતી તેથી આખો દિવસ બંનેમાંથી કોઈ ઘરે રહેતું ન હતું. અલય પણ સવારે સ્કૂલે જતો અને બાર વાગ્યે ઘરે આવી જતો પછી આખો દિવસ તે એકલો જ ઘરે રહેતો. નાના બાળકોને સ્વાભાવિક રીતે જ જીગ્નાશાવૃત્તિ હોય તેથી
