દિવાળીના એક દિવસ પહેલા ગંગા સાસરેથી પીયર આવી રહી હતી, ભાલકાંઠાના ખોરપાટા ગામડેથી સુરતના એક સારા ઘરમાં તેનું સગપણ કરીને પીતાએ દિકરીને સાસરે વળાવેલ. ગંગાના પતી મોહનને મુંબઇમાં દરીયાકાંઢે નોકરી હતી એટલે પતીપત્ની મુંબઇમાં જ રહેતા, આથી ખોરપાટે આવવાનો સમય બહું ન મળતો, પણ એક વર્ષ થઇ ગયું હોવાથી ગંગાએ પતી મોહન સામે જીદ કરી અને દિવાળીના પર્વ પર બન્ને ખોરપાટા બે દિવસ રહેવા આવતા હતા.શહેરના માર્ગેથી રસ્તો ખોરપાટાના રસ્તે વળ્યો અને ગંગાને પોતાના ગામની મહેક આવવા લાગી. ખેતર અને વગડો તેને પોતાની તરફ બોલાવા લાગ્યો. ધીમે ધીમે વાતો વાયરો તેને મદહોશ કરવા લાગ્યો અને તે ઉદાસ થવા લાગી.
