ધોમખતો બપોરનો તાપ, નિર્જન - વેરાન જગ્યા, ગામડાંનો ડરાવનો રસ્તો જાણે તાપથી તરસ્યો થયો હોય એવો ભાસતો હતો. બસમાંથી ઉતરીને આજુબાજુ નજર નાંખી રસ્તાની બંને બાજુ ખેતરો સિવાય કંઇ કોઈ નજરે પડ્યું નહીં. એ ઝડપથી ડગલાં ભરતી ચાલવા લાગી. જાણે કોઈ અજાણ્યો ડર એને સતાવતો હોય કે અજાણી મુસબીત એનો પીછો કરી રહી હોય એમ એ ઝડપથી ચાલી રહી હતી. અહીં જે સુમન સાથે થયું હતું એનો ડર આજે પણ જાગ્રત હતો. આમ તો રોજ એની સાથે એની સહપાથી, પાડોશી, મિત્ર એવી જિજ્ઞા હોય પણ આજે એ નહોતી આવી. કોલેજથી ઘરે જવાનો
