એક શહેર ના રેલવે-સ્ટેશનની થોડે દુર એક નાની વસાહત. આમતો નાના-મોટા ઘર ઘણા, પણ એ વસાહત માં એક ઘરની નાની ઓરડીમાંથી ચાલીસના વૉટના બલ્બનું અજવાળું થોડું થોડું બારી-બારણાની તિરાડોમાંથી બહારની દિશામાં જણાતું હતું. મનુકાકા એક તપેલીમાંથી મીઠાવાળા પાણીના ભીના કપડાંની પટ્ટી કરીને જીવીકાકી ના કપાળ પર મુકતા, ને પટ્ટી સુકાઈ એટલે ફરી તપેલીમાંથી બીજી પટ્ટી- વારાફરતી બદલાતા રહેતા. "ચાલશે હવે, રહેવા દો ને ! લોકો જોશે તો કહેશેકે આ પતિ પાસેથી સેવા લ્યે છે !" મનુ કાકા એમ તો હઠીલા - જીવીનો તાવ ન ઉતારે ત્યાં સુધી મેદાન છોડે તેમ નહોતા ! "
