ધીમા અને મક્કમ પગલે નથુરામ ગોડસે આગળ વધ્યો. ચુસ્ત ભારતીય. ખાદીનો જ ડ્રેસ. ખિસ્સામાં હાથ. હળવી ભીડ વચ્ચે તેણે દૂરથી આવતા ગાંધીજીને પ્રણામ કર્યા. હવે ગાંધીજી લોનમાં આવી ચૂકેલા. સાથે ષોડશી મનુબેન અને યુવા તેજ પ્રસરાવતાં સુશીલા નય્યર. કોઈએ સુતરની આંટી અર્પણ કરી તો કોઈએ ફૂલ. ગાંધીજી એક હાથમાં તેમની નિશાની લાકડી અને બીજો હાથ મેદની સામે હલાવતા આગળ વધ્યા. સાંજનો સૂર્ય તેમના મુખારવિંદ પાછળ તેજપુંજ જેવો ચમકતો હતો. તેનાં સીધાં કિરણો ગોડસેના રતુંબડા મુખને ઓર લાલિમા આપી રહ્યા હતા. ગોડસેની આ લાલી ગુસ્સો, અજ્ઞાત ભય, કોઈ ધ્રુજારી કે કયા ભાવને લીધે હતી તે કહી શકાતું ન હતું. ગોડસે નમ્યો.
