વજનદાર કુહાડી સટાક દઈને લાકડાં પર પડી. ત્રણેક ઘા તો એ લાકડું ખમી ગયું પણ આ ચોથા ઘાએ તેનો એક કટકો ઊડીને દૂર ફેંકાઈ ગયો. કરસનના મોં પર ગર્વની આછી ઝલક ઊભરી આવી. આજ સવારથી એકધારો મંડ્યો હતો લાકડાં ફાડવા. જોકે એ ઠૂંઠાં જેવા લાકડાંનો ઢગલો તો હજી એટલો જ દેખાતો. ધગધગતો તડકો છેક માથે ચડી આવ્યો, ઉઘાડા ડીલમાં પરસેવાનાં રેલા ઊઠ્યાં, પણ રામ જાણે કેમ, લાકડાં તો ખૂટતાં જ નહોતાં. તેણે મનમાં હળવો અફસોસ કર્યો : 'સાઈઠ રૂપિયામાં તો ભારી પડી ગયું !' કેટલા દિવસની રખડપાટ પછી છેક આજે માંડ માંડ કામ મળેલું. એમાય ભારતીબેને ભાવમાં કેટલી
