૧૪મી ઓલિમ્પિક્સ લંડનમાં રમાઈ હતી અને એ વર્ષ હતું ૧૯૪૮, એટલેકે આઝાદ ભારતને હજી માંડમાંડ વર્ષ થયું હતું. આમ એ વર્ષની લંડન ઓલિમ્પિક્સમાં ભારત પહેલીવાર તિરંગા સાથે રમવા ઉતરવાનું હતું. લંડન ઓલિમ્પિક્સનું વિશ્વના અન્ય રાષ્ટ્રો માટે પણ ખાસ્સુંએવું મહત્ત્વ હતું કારણકે આ ઓલિમ્પિક્સ બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધની સમાપ્તિ બાદ પ્રથમ ઓલિમ્પિક્સ હતી જે ૧૯૩૬ બાદ બાર વર્ષના ગાળા પછી રમાઈ રહી હતી.
