રાત્રીનો એ એક ઘોર અંધકાર હતો. જે રાત્રીને ગાઢ બનાવતો હતો. દરિયાની સપાટી પર સડસડાટ વાતા વાયરાની જેમ, આ કળીયુગનો પ્રકોપ દિવસેને દિવસે વિરાટ સ્વરૂપ ધારણ કરી રહ્યો હતો. શિયાળાની કાતિલ ઠંડી રાત્રીને વધુ ને વધુ શીમણી બનાવી રહી હતી. હોસ્પિટલમાં એક ખૂણાના બાકડા પાસે બેઠેલી મારી મા, તેની સામેની દીવાલ પર લાગેલી એક જૂની-પૂરાણી ઘડિયાળની સામે જોઈ રહી હતી. જેમાં રાત્રના સવા ત્રણ વાગ્યા હતા. દેહની ઠંડી અને દિલના દર્દને એ છૂપાવી રહી હોય એવું લાગતું હતું. હું આ બધું મુગ્ધ થઈને જોઈ રહી. ભવિષ્યની ચિંતા અને વર્તમાનનો ખ્યાલ મારા મગજમાં દરિયાના વિશાળ મોજાની જેમ ઉછળતો હતો. મારા પિતા
